New design, new carol

Sorry for the long delay in releasing new music. We have been quite busy on the technical end of things. Gratemusic.com has been completely redesigned for easier navigation and future growth. Have a look around and contact us with your feedback.

We proudly announce the release of a new Christmas carol, Peaceful the Night, available through our Christmas page. With lyrics by David Macfarlane and music for SATB voices by Nathan Howe, this carol addresses not only the nativity of Christ, but his role as our creator and redeemer as well as his second coming.

Merry Christmas, Part 1

December is too late to start working on Christmas music for those who perform. Thus, we present today our Christmas page, an easy way to access all the Christmas music we will release in the coming weeks. We also proudly present our first offering of the Christmas season, Far, Far Away on Judea's Plains. This well-known text by John Menzies Macfarlane has been set to new music for SATB chorus by Nathan Howe. It features jubilant compound meters and a memorable melody. Access the sheet music and hear a MIDI demonstration through our Christmas page or our Choral page.

New MP3 for Emulation from Psalms of the 21st Century

We recently posted sheet music for Emulation by Nathan Howe, and even for accomplished pianists, it is difficult to get a realistic sense of the piece without hearing a choir sing it. To present it to the world, Nathan Howe has recorded Emulation with a choir composed of some of his closest friends - his alter egos. Head to the Recordings page to download and listen. Then feel free to Tell Us what you think.

Out of Silence, Majesty

Sheet music for a new solo by Nathan Howe, Out of Silence, Majesty, is now available from LDSmusic.us. Written for use in a recent missionary fireside, Out of Silence, Majesty compares the silence before the creation of the world with the silence of Gethsemane and the silence of the Sacred Grove. This has fast become one of Nathan Howe's most requested songs. Find it on our LDS Solos Page.

By the way, did you know that texts are now posted with several hymns and other songs? Within the next few weeks, most pieces will have pages with the lyrics for you to preview.

Exciting Announcements: Nathan Howe on LDS Music Today Podcast and new websites up and running

We don't usually send out the Noisebox so early in the week, but we have some excellent news! First, we have just been informed that one of the songs from LDSmuisc.us has been selected for play on the LDS Music Today Podcast with Steve Larsen. It will be on show 40, scheduled to be posted this week! To download it, go to http://www.ldsmusictoday.com/ and click on the "Download the Show" link on the main menu. If you enjoy the podcast, please let Steve know.

Our second exciting news item is that after a few days of quirky performance in non-Microsoft browsers, we are happy to announce that the redesigned LDSmusic.us and gratemusic.com are up and running, and Firefox seems to like them! Feel free to let us know what you think of the new look, and also tell us if you have any problems accessing the music. You can reach us through the contact page. To celebrate, we will be posting new editions of some of our hymns in different keys that may work better for choirs. We will, of course, keep the old ones available as well. Keep an eye on your favorites, and we will send a report listing what we have posted in the Noisebox on Friday.

Come, Ye Thankful People and a site redesign

First off, Nathan Howe's new arrangement of the beloved hymn Come, Ye Thankful People for unaccompanied six-part mixed chorus is available on the Grate Music Choral Music page. This two-page arrangement is perfect for a Thanksgiving program of any type. Download it today, and listen to the MIDI file to get an idea of how it sounds.

Second, the sites are going through a few changes. The new format for LDSmusic.us is still in the works, but gratemusic.com has already changed some. For example, on pages like the Choral Music page and the Hymns page, clicking the title of the piece sends you to a page where you can get information on the music and access the different file formats in which we publish it. This will be especially helpful when we start posting songs in multiple keys. While we work out our web design bugs, the sites work best when viewed in Internet Explorer. We realize that for some, this is terrible news, but we hope to be more compatible with Firefox and other browsers shortly.

Sonnet on Endurance

This week, we present Nathan Howe's hymn, Sonnet on Endurance. It was written for a good friend in Berkeley, NSW Australia in 2003. The three verses are four-line stanzas of a sonnet describing the relationship of the believer with Christ, while the refrain is the final two-line prayer, "O Father, wilt Thou help me to endure The fire that will refine and make me pure!" This hymn was written to address discouragement and depression with the light Christ can bring. Download Sonnet on Endurance today from our hymns page.

Beautiful Zion, Built Above for Women's Voices

As promised, Beautiful Zion, Built Above is now available on our Choral Music page in an arrangement for women's voices. Nathan Howe based his SATB arrangement on this earlier SSA version, which he wrote for a fireside at the request of Alli Hansen. They were married almost two years later. New Recording - One Seed

LDSmusic.us and GrateMusic.com present Nathan Howe's new recording, One Seed. Written for the baptism of our friend Amber last summer, this solo expounds on the process of obtaining faith and allowing Christ to develop it within ourselves. "I was actually writing this on the way to the baptism," Nate explains. "I had to drive to Fort Collins to order an engagement ring, and on the 45-minute drive each way, the song just came. I finished it about thirty seconds before I sang it for the first time. " Although it is the fruit of procrastination, we think it's worth a listen. One Seed is available for MP3 download through our LDS Recordings page.

Just for Fun: Waltz in 45 Seconds

Did you ever play Chopin's "Minute Waltz"? This is nothing like that. Born of dorm life boredom in 2000, this brief waltz was too much fun to keep in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet. If you enjoy it, good. If you don't, at least you haven't even spent even a minute of your life listening to it. Grate Music somewhat proudly presents Nathan Howe's Waltz in 45 Seconds. Download it on our Instrumental Music page.
